In Japanese, the word MA describes the space between two points, an interval. It is the neutral space that remains between things, creating a distance between them and giving them meaning.

We often think of the space between things as a silent void, a sort of static and linear vacuum where nothing happens. This can occur between two volumes, as between two sounds or two words. But silence is not empty at all; the ‘disturbing’ effect that noise can have on us ‘visually’ can also be found in silence. Whether it is discomfort or stimulation, it brings with it something mysterious; indeed, I would say that silence is actually a mystery that endures.

To me, it appears as an active space that can create disorientation and raise questions, loaded with meaning and variable action. In reality, this space claims its capacity to “tell.”

Its external limits do not constrain it, but perhaps contain it, exerting a pressure that creates something. Nature is a great example of this process; in fact, when forced into a space, it expresses its maximum creative potential.

If we look at this space through the lens of time, we realize that every sign shows a before and an after, that something has happened or is perhaps about to happen.

LO SPAZIO TRA LE COSE  (In Between)

MA in lingua giapponese descrive lo spazio tra due punti, un intervallo. È lo spazio neutro che resta tra le cose, creando una distanza tra loro e dotandole di senso.

Spesso pensiamo che lo spazio tra le cose sia un vuoto silenzioso, una sorta di vacuum statico e lineare, dove nulla accade. Questo può accadere tra due volumi, come tra due suoni o due parole. Ma il silenzio non è affatto vuoto, l’azione di “disturbo” che il rumore può esercitare “visivamente” su di noi, si può rintracciare anche nel silenzio. Sia esso un disagio o uno stimolo, esso porta con se qualcosa di misterioso, anzi, direi, che il silenzio è proprio un mistero che perdura.

A me appare come uno spazio attivo che può creare disorientamento e produrre domande, carico di senso e dall’azione variabile. In realtà, questo spazio rivendica una capacità di “dire”.

I suoi limiti esterni non lo scarificano, forse lo contengono esercitando una pressione che crea qualcosa. La Natura è un grande esempio di questo processo, infatti se costretta in uno spazio, esprime il suo massimo potenziale creativo.
Se guardiamo questo spazio sotto la lente del tempo, ci rendiamo conto che ogni segno dimostra un prima e un dopo, che qualcosa è accaduto o forse sta per accadere.
